Derinkuyu is an underground city located in Turkey, in the Cappadocia. This incredible structure was carved into soft volcanic rock and features an intricate network of tunnels, rooms, and passageways, extending across eight levels and reaching a depth of about 85 meters. Its existence was only relatively recently discovered, in 1963, when a local resident accidentally found a hidden room behind a wall in a house.
The wonders of Derinkuyu are many. It is estimated that the underground city could have housed up to 20,000 people along with their livestock and supplies. The chambers served a variety of purposes, including dwellings, kitchens, stables, cellars, and even churches.
