We talked about Western Sicily, its beauty from both a cultural and scenic perspective. Today, instead, we focus on Eastern Sicily, which from both points of view is certainly no less impressive. A dream for many, a walk on an active volcano is something thrilling and surprising, but not only that. Everything the territory derives from it is interesting and, above all, absolutely unexpected. Let’s see why in a dedicated itinerary.

Eastern Sicily Itinerary: Discovering Nature

Sicily perhaps holds much of nature’s beauty: fragrant greenery, crystal-clear sea, very diverse beaches – from rocky shores to fine sand, there are countless variations along the island’s coasts, plus active volcanoes, inhabited and uninhabited islands, salt pans, plateaus, tropical heat, and snow. There really is everything, for every taste. And surely this list doesn’t fully capture the variety of these landscapes.

What convinces travelers most to head towards Eastern Sicily , the area stretching from the Tyrrhenian side to the entire Ionian coast of the island, is the landscape aspect linked to Etna. An active volcano – indeed, at times very active – Etna marks not only a regional landmark but also something that has shaped its appearance, customs, and traditions.

Consider that on the volcano many delicacies are produced, from honey to the large Etna apples, as well as chestnuts and grapes (and wines!). Etna, through its eruptions, has created unique places in the world, such as the Alcantara Gorges. But no spoilers! Let’s see the perfect stops for a one-week trip in Eastern Sicily.

Arrival in Catania, the “Volcanic” Province

We could say that Catania, along with Palermo among the largest cities in Sicily, is certainly a “volcanic” place. Both for its landscape aspect, since Etna lies within its province, and because it is a lively place culturally and socially.

In this city, you can find interesting places like the cathedral and the square with the little elephant, which symbolizes the city, as well as the so-called Via Etna, the city’s main street, unique because it is black. Here, one of the main materials used for paving is lava stone. After all, it’s very easy to find!

Once you arrive, after touring the main attractions, you should consider that you absolutely cannot stay home in the evening. Catania is full of venues and places where you can enjoy live music, meet new people, and have fun.

Relaxing in the Province of Catania: The Spectacle of Aci Trezza, Verga’s Place, and Bronte

Although the second stop is a seaside location – and sea calls for relaxation, we’d say – don’t think there isn’t a surprise factor here as well. Aci Trezza is a spectacular place, famous for its “faraglioni” (sea stacks) and the “Islands of the Cyclops.” It is said that the faraglioni are huge rocks thrown at Odysseus by the Cyclops, left in the sea because, of course, ordinary humans couldn’t move them! These spots can be easily visited by boat, with several tours departing daily from the coast.

Not only that: Aci Trezza is famous not only for its scenic factor and its unique fishing village. It is also the hometown of Verga, the famous writer. A small gem – along with the author’s house – that will surely make your trip to Eastern Sicily a true story to tell.

Heading more inland, you can go to Bronte, one of the so-called “Etnean towns.” These are places at the foot of Etna, whose agricultural production is closely linked to the volcano. Here visitors can taste some of Sicily’s finest products: Bronte’s pistachio specialties.

In recent years, this pistachio has been recognized for its quality and uniqueness throughout Italy and the world. All local establishments produce both sweet and savory pistachio products, from Nutella-style creams to savory pastries with pistachio pesto. A spectacular treat found only in Eastern Sicily!

Further Up in Eastern Sicily: Taormina and the Alcantara Gorges

One of Sicily’s VIP spots, Taormina is already in the province of Messina. The city is divided into two levels: the higher one, on Mount Tauro (from which the city’s name derives), where you find famous shops, the public gardens, and breathtaking views; and the lower part, just above the sea, where the beaches and resorts are located.

Every year thousands of people walk to Isola Bella from here. It is a small island off the coast connected by a narrow strip of land, easily reachable by foot or swimming. There you’ll find an ancient palace and a series of paths through a tropical garden with a fascinating history.

Heading back toward Catania, you can stop at the Alcantara Gorges. These places are a true natural spectacle. Formed by the river of the same name, they are a kind of canyon... but made of lava stone! The lava followed the river’s path and cooled so quickly that it took on a geometric shape dominating the local landscape.

Visiting in summer means wading in the icy waters of the Alcantara (averaging 8 degrees Celsius), while the canyon walls (where many go canyoning, by the way) are scorching hot due to the heat conductivity of lava stone. A phenomenon seen in very few places worldwide. And Eastern Sicily is one of them.

Trekking on Etna, A Walk Like No Other

For nature and outdoor lovers, an Etna trekking experience is a must. The volcano of Eastern Sicily is the highest active volcano in all of Europe, and it takes pride in this title.

There are various trekking routes in the area, varying according to the trekker’s ability and how high they want to climb. Generally, those starting lower down are suitable for most people, but be careful: it’s best to wear proper hiking boots and long pants, and be prepared to get covered in black dust!

Syracuse and Ortigia, Gems of Eastern Sicily

You can’t forget Syracuse. This city is certainly one of Sicily’s most characteristic places and one that must be seen at least once in a lifetime.

Known both for the beauty of its historic center and for an important archaeological park, in Syracuse you can have unique experiences, such as watching Greek tragedies performed in a real ancient theater.

Ortigia, on the other hand, is a small island right in front of Syracuse city, representing an additional part of its historic center. Here you’ll find churches and discover what kind of trip suits you best.
