The Golden Circle

Skipping the first day of travel from Italy to Keflavik airport and arrival at the Reykjavik hotel, let’s go straight to the stops of our trip and the wonders we will discover.

On the first full day of the trip, we explore the Golden Circle. This route, about 300 km long, starts not far from the Icelandic capital and touches three of the most beautiful areas of the entire island.

It begins with a visit to the Þingvellir National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Iceland’s first national park, and the setting of some of the country’s most important historical moments.

It is said that here in 930 AD the Vikings founded the world’s first democratic parliament. It is also known that Iceland declared Christianity its state religion here and that independence from Denmark was proclaimed here as well.

Þingvellir is also one of the most sensational places in the world, the only one where you can clearly see the clash between two tectonic plates, the Eurasian and the North American.

Gullfoss and Geysir

The second unmissable stop within the Golden Circle is Gullfoss waterfall,a true natural jewel. The name literally means “Golden Falls,” and it features a double drop of 32 meters, plunging into a narrow gorge. It can be admired both from below and above, following a short and easy path.

The third and final stop of the Golden Circle is the Geysir.Located in the Haukadalur geothermal area, rich in hot springs, Geysir is the oldest geyser in the world.Until a few decades ago, it used to erupt high jets of water up to 80 meters tall. However, tourists’ habit of throwing stones inside to trigger eruptions has made it practically inactive.

Nevertheless, nearby you can admire Strokkur, which erupts up to 30 meters every ten minutes or so.

The Fjords of Borgarfjordur

The journey then continues to western Iceland, in the region of Borgarfjordur, characterized by one of the country’s most beautiful fjords. Here we will visit the waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss..

Their fame is not due to their height or the power of their waters. Rather, Hraunfossar seems to emerge directly from the earth, from the lava field covering the valley, formed by eruptions of nearby volcanoes. The water thus flows from the ground, descending along a slope of extraordinary beauty.

A little higher up is Barnafoss, whose fame is linked to a local legend. It is said that once the waterfall was topped by a bridge from which two children fell to their deaths. Distraught, their mother convinced the local population to destroy the bridge to prevent the tragedy from happening again.

Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Our group trip in western Iceland continues as we move from Borgarfjordur to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.Considered a miniature Iceland, the peninsula summarizes all the wonders you can admire in this splendid land: fjords and golden beaches, volcanoes and lava fields, beautiful lighthouses, and a great variety of animals, from whales to seals.

Very close to the Arctic Circle, the peninsula is dominated by the Snæfellsjökull glacier, which Jules Verne described as the entrance to the center of the Earth. But the real attraction of this territory is Kirkjufell, the mountain “only” 463 meters high, which resembles a church steeple to not miss any of our events, in Italy and worldwide!
