Italy offers unique emotions thanks to its vast variety of landscapes and places. Yet another example is the presence of a special place, the Heart Trail Scanno on Lake Scanno, in Abruzzo.
The name comes from the shape of the lake, which from a particular perspective looks like a heart. For this reason, in recent years this area has won over everyone who has visited, especially lovers.
Choosing to spend a Sunday hiking to the lake via the Heart Trail is an opportunity to seize soon, especially with the arrival of the warmer season. It is an easy path that can be done alone or in larger groups, perhaps accompanied by friends and new people.
Where the Heart Trail Scanno Is Located
The Heart Trail leads to Lake Scanno, in Abruzzo, in the province of L'Aquila. The lake was formed by the interruption of the Tasso river's course due to a landslide from the Genzana mountain group, within the Abruzzo Apennines. This Italian region is particularly suitable for trekking lovers thanks to the many possible mountain trips in Abruzzo, generally so well organized as to be suitable for everyone.
This trail is part of a dense network of mountain paths, connecting the entire area around the lake and beyond. It is a fairly quick trail, between 40 and 70 minutes depending on your pace, and so easy that it can be done even with little children. For this reason, it is definitely possible to go in a group to enjoy together the view of a truly unique lake in the world.
Lake Scanno, in fact, is famous for its characteristic heart shape, a natural wonder that reveals itself in all its splendor especially from the surrounding heights. This feature makes the place not only a sought-after destination for hikers but also for lovers and those seeking a romantic corner immersed in nature.
Along the way, you can encounter flora and fauna typical of the region, with centuries-old trees offering shade and refuge for numerous bird species. Along the trail, several rest areas allow travelers to rest and enjoy breathtaking views, perhaps with a nice picnic in the shade. Once you reach the lake, its crystal-clear waters invite a refreshing dip or a peaceful pedal boat ride, making the experience even more complete and memorable.

How to Prepare to Reach Lake Scanno
The Heart Trail is unpaved. Starting from this fact, and considering that – despite the modest elevation gain – the path is uphill, you should assume that wearing hiking boots is necessary.
Those who want to bring their children along should consider that this is not a stroller-friendly path. It’s better to carry your little ones alternatively – for example, using baby carriers – or wait until they are a bit more independent if that’s not possible.
It’s definitely essential not to arrive unprepared by checking the weather forecast. This will also be useful for reaching the rest area, as chains may be needed in case of snow.
Moreover, it’s important to equip yourself properly to face the trail safely and comfortably. Wearing sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes is essential to prevent slips and ensure good grip on uneven terrain. Bringing layered clothing will allow you to easily adapt to weather changes that may occur during the day. Don’t forget to include a windbreaker and a hat to protect yourself from possible gusts of wind or sudden rain.
Another indispensable item is a backpack, which should contain enough water, energy snacks, a map of the route, a flashlight, and a first aid kit. If you plan to spend many hours outdoors, a thermal blanket and a small inflatable pillow might prove useful for a rest moment. Finally, always remember to respect the surrounding environment: collect your waste and avoid disturbing local wildlife, essential gestures to preserve the beauty and integrity of the place.
How to Reach the Heart Trail
There are places where it’s really hard to easily find the right path. Well, Lake Scanno is not one of them. Just consider that you can reach the Heart Trail even by shuttle buses from the municipality of Scanno, so that no tourist gets lost once they arrive in town. Unfortunately, however, the only public transport to this place is by bus, as there is no train station in Scanno.
Despite this, the growing fame of the lake has also allowed some development of this type of tourism, and it won’t be difficult to find an alternative. And, why not, if you decide to travel in a Meeters group, you’ll surely find someone willing to offer a ride!
If, instead, you have your own car, you can drive directly to Scanno (exit “Cocullo” on the A24 Rome-Pescara). From there, you need to reach “Via della Pineta” and park your vehicle there. Once on foot, reaching the trekking path will be a breeze: the Heart Trail is very well signposted.
Once you take the road, before reaching the panoramic point, you will pass by the Hermitage of Sant’Egidio, a church that organizes group trips perfect for those who want to make friends or, why not, in such a romantic place, hope to find love. Just sign up with Meeters to discover a world of events and organized excursions already available on the site!
