The Lessini Mountains: A Brief Historical Overview

The Lessinia territory has been inhabited since ancient times, thanks especially to its morphological features and the abundance of raw materials available to its first inhabitants.

This area has always been fertile hunting and farming ground. Additionally, it offered safe shelter thanks to the presence of several caves ideal for spending the night or taking refuge in case of danger.

Already during the Lower Paleolithic era, primitive urban settlements arose in these areas, especially in places like Riparo Soman, Fumane Cave, and Ponte di Veja. Here, various archaeological finds have been discovered, such as spear points, bone fragments, and axes.

In Lessinia, early humans could hunt bears, wolves, and various types of rodents and find safe shelter thanks to many caves carved into the rock. However, it was from the Iron Age, at the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC, that the first hut settlements, known as castellieri, appeared among the Lessini Mountains.

One of these was visible for many years at Castel Sottosengia, near Breonio, but today for hikes in Lessinia, sign up on the website and join our initiatives.
