Nowadays, it is normal to feel lonely and disoriented: adult lives are hectic and, if we want, also deprived of social opportunities that were instead very strong during youth.
Practicing sports activities to meet people is a practice that can be helpful on many occasions; we have already discussed it in detail in a couple of articles listing the best sports (this one and this one, for example).

Today, instead of producing yet anotherlist of sports and activities, let's try to explain why sports can encourage meeting new people and forming new friendships: a topic that deserves a more interesting treatment but is often overlooked.

At Meeters, we have considerable experience in terms of events and friendships, especially when the two come together within sports events..
If you are looking for an event to meet new people, we recommend you take a look at our entire selection of events, occasions, and opportunities.

With this premise, let's try to discover how sport can help people build bonds with others.

The Genesis of a Friendship

Nowadays, the word friendship has a somewhat distorted meaning compared to what it originally implied.
Friendship in the past was the bond between two people through the sharing of something.
Values, trust, esteem, interests; being someone's friend means being able to talk freely with that person, sharing your experiences with them and confessing fears, sadness, and much more.
All with the certainty of being understood or, at least, listened to.

Today, the internet has significantly changed this concept, favoring a more frivolous kind of friendship, so to speak.
Friendship nowadays seems to be synonymous with the word follower, and therefore many believe themselves to be friends with many without any real sharing.
Virtual communication means are approaches incapable of acting as a bond.

What really needs to be recognized within a friendship (or a more general interpersonal relationship) is the need for a bond.
A friendship can truly blossom if there are opportunities to see and meet again, perhaps always with new things to talk about.
Although at first these kinds of situations are difficult to obtain naturally, practicing a sport together can simply help.

Sport as a Journey

Practicing a sport is a true emotional journey that, likely, puts a person in contact with a group of other people united by the same goal: to complete a path that grants skills. The road that transforms a novice into an expert is traveled together by a cluster of people that gradually becomes a social unit: a group.

The group is not a minimal unit of meaning within a sports context but rather an entity that lives, feeds, and can also perish.
In sports, it is normal tosee groups of people grow and then break apart, perhaps due to someone's disappointment, or another's failure.
Pursuing the journey, continuing to walk one's path, however, allows the creation of a new group, always with shared goals and a chemistry to respect.

This dynamic is a powerful catalyst for friendships and allows the birth of deep interpersonal relationships, where the constant challenge with one's limits allows a person to be appreciated more closely.
The more hours of training with another group of people, the easier it is to reach the right state of intimacy and interaction.

Team Sports or Individual Sports?

Now, let's try to resolve a doubt that surely many have had: but to meet people, is it better to practice a team sport or an individual sport?
Behind this question there can be multiple reasons, but there is one purely logistical that might interest adults a lot: time.
A team sport, in fact, tends to be decidedly more time-consuming than an individual sport, especially if you manage to compete at certain levels.

In this sense, we can start by saying that team sports are very important because they allow the development of a collaborative behavior that can be extremely important for developing new friendships. Team sports are the best gyms in the world when we talk about solidarity, self-determination, and shared responsibility; individual sports are less effective in this regard.

Still, staying within the material dynamic of things, it must also be said that there are not many team sports for adults around: most sports events tend to prefer organizing courses and opportunities for younger people. Adults, essentially, have a wide choice when it comes to individual sports (which are never entirely individual, but you get the idea).
A good individual sport, to foster friendships, requires a prior willingness of the person to interact with other participants or group members.
