What Is Canyoning and How It Differs from Torrenting
Let’s first try to understand what canyoning is, this new frontier of outdoor sports that takes its name from the word canyon. Essentially, canyoning is a sport that involves following streams from start to finish, moving directly through the water.
Many confuse it with other experiences, such as rafting or kayaking even near waterfalls. However, this confusion is linked to the English name, which resembles canoeing.
Canyoning, although different from these sports, also presents many challenges for the inexperienced without a guide. It requires almost comical equipment: you wear wetsuits but also helmets, backpacks, and ropes like the best climbers.
This is necessary to practice it safely, because clearly crossing the bed of a watercourse, which is usually eroded by the water, can be quite dangerous.
These channels are usually the so-called gorges, that is, ravines where the water flows not only horizontally but sometimes vertically (as in canyoning near waterfalls in Italy).
Regarding the difference with torrenting, there is none: the two words mean the same thing, only canyoning is English, while the other is purely Italian.
