Sri Lanka is a captivating island, one of South Asia’s most sought-after destinations for those who love adventure and discovering new lands not yet overrun by mass tourism. The allure of these ancient and mysterious places is strong, and now is the time to give in to temptation and finally plan a trip to Sri Lanka!

In this article, however, we want to provide you with a guide on everything you need to know before departure to make your stay unforgettable, helping you choose the best possible vacation. Let’s get started!

What to Know Before Traveling to Sri Lanka

Formerly known as Ceylon, the island of Sri Lanka is today nicknamed the Tear of Indiadue to its distinctive teardrop shape and proximity to the Indian continent. Bordered to the northeast by the Bay of Bengaland to the southwest by the Maldives, it is rich in forests, temples, ruins, and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Its fame is mainly due to its tea cultivation and trade, but also to its history and its culture influenced by Hindu and Buddhist traditions. It is an unspoiled land whose true attraction lies in its nature and the extraordinary variety of wildlife, including elephants, monkeys, and many colorful birds.

When to Go

Any time seems perfect to plan a trip to Sri Lanka! The country features a tropical, hot, and humid climatebut is punctuated by three significant monsoon seasons.

Following the rainfall patterns, it’s best to avoid the eastern coast from December to February, the southwestern areas—including the capital Colombo—the plains, and the inland mountains from April to October. From October to December, the entire island experiences heavy rainfall.

In general, February and March are the most recommended months to travel. However, if your vacation falls in August and you want to explore the island’s beaches for proper relaxation, the recommended area is the northeastern coast, including Trincomalee and Uppuveli. For enjoying the sea in December, the southwestern coast and Mirissa are the best choices.

Since trips to Sri Lanka aren’t something you organize every day, we recommend booking a tour of at least ten days, preferably fifteen. This way, you can be sure to explore multiple regions and see as much as possible of the country’s rich offerings.

How to Get There

Sri Lanka is easily reachable by flight from many Italian airports with various airlines. Flights generally land atBandaranaike International Airport, just a few kilometers from the capital Colombo.

The city is therefore recommended as the first stop on your itinerary, as it offers many hotels and quality accommodations. Moreover, from Colombo you can travel to other areas and locations in Sri Lanka, by bus or train. To get around the city, renting a tuk tuk, the traditional three-wheeled taxis that zip through traffic with enviable agility, is a great idea!

What You Need to Depart

To visit Sri Lanka, you need a passport valid for at least six months and an entry visa which you can easily obtain online from home. Additionally, you must present your outbound and return tickets, as tourist visits can last a maximum of thirty days.

No vaccinations are mandatory, but recommended ones include hepatitis A, typhoid, and Japanese encephalitis. It is also advisable to take out travel insurance for peace of mind.

Finally, Sri Lanka was a British colony for a long time and today it is the perfect place to discover Italy and the world in a new way!
