The Monasteries of Daphni, Ossios Loukas, and Nea Moni
Among Greece’s UNESCO heritage sites, it’s impossible to overlook three monasteries: those of Daphni, Ossios Loukas, and Nea Moni. The reasons are simple: these three monasteries perfectly exemplify how religious architecture developed during the middle Byzantine period.
The Daphni Monastery is located about ten kilometers from Athens and was first built in the sixth century AD to Christianize the area.
The Ossios Loukas Monastery is located in Distomo, not far from Delphi, and houses the tomb of the hermit Saint Loukas. The Nea Moni Monastery, on the island of Chios, is the most rustic among the monasteries despite its construction during the eleventh century; it is certainly among the most beautiful UNESCO sites in Greece.
