Traveling is one of the most wonderful things in the world, but unfortunately before departure we have to deal with trip planning, packing the suitcase, and all the stress that comes with it. Every time, in fact, we end up asking ourselves the same question: what you can't bring in your carry-on and what we can put in without fear of having to throw it away before boarding the plane?

What Is Carry-On Luggage?

Carry-on luggage is nothing more than the small suitcase we bring on board the plane with us. Essentially, it's the suitcase that will be placed in the overhead bin above our seat and not in the hold.

This type of luggageis a very convenient solution that allows us to travel light if we have a short trip planned, but also to bring a little extra if we have a long vacation ahead.

Generally, carry-on luggage is always included in the price of all tickets, even the lowest-cost ones, or can be added for a fairly small fee.

The rules for bringing luggage on board with us are few and very simple and vary very little from one airline to another. The dimensions of the trolley or bag we use must not exceed 55x40x20 cm. While the weight of the suitcase must not exceed 10 kg, under penalty of paying a fine and having the luggage checked in.

Some airlines allow a larger margin regarding suitcase dimensions, while others only allow bags weighing around 7-8 kg. We therefore recommend always checking the luggage specifications found both in the booking confirmation email and on the tickets.

What You Can Bring in Your Carry-On

Regarding what you can and cannot bring on board, the security rules introduced after September 11, 2001, are universal and apply to all airlines.

In general, you can pack all non-dangerous and non-blunt objects. Apart from clothes and shoes, which are practically essential, here are other things you can put in your carry-on that often raise doubts!

Makeup Items and Other Beauty Tools

These include makeup bags, lipsticks, and mascaras, but also tools such as tweezers for eyebrows, scissors and nail files for nails, and razors.

Keep in mind, however, that scissors must have rounded tips and blades no longer than six centimeters, while razor blades must be sealed and protected. This category also includes hairdryers and straighteners.

Medicines

Medicines are always allowed, but if you have packages exceeding 100 ml, you must also carry a medical prescription. Medical devices such as blood pressure monitors are also allowed.

Drones and Photography Equipment

Everything in this category is allowed, from cameras to tripods, batteries to lenses. Being valuable items, you can bring them in the cabin without worrying about losing them during the trip!

Lighters and Electronic Cigarettes

These are allowed inside the bag, but obviously must not be used under any circumstances during the flight. However, check with your airline if your destination is abroad. For example, China does not allow lighters on planes, so if you need one, it's better to buy it after traveling.

Liquids (Following the Rules)

In your carry-on, you can bring liquids such as water, syrups, shampoo, deodorants, creams, gels, sprays, mascara, toothpaste, perfumes, foams, and even food items like creams and fruit juices.

Each must be contained in a small container not exceeding 100 ml, with a total limit of one liter. You can therefore bring up to 10 bottles of 100 ml each . Be careful when packing and choose only what you really need.

Also, the various bottles must be placed in a transparent plastic bag, which you will remove from your luggage during security checks. Finally, you can also bring your trusty water bottle, but it must be empty!

Food

You are allowed to bring food packages from home, excluding obviously liquids and creams over 100 ml. An exception is made if you are traveling with a child, but you must declare this at security.

It's always good to check which foods are allowed on planes when traveling internationally. Restrictions vary depending on countries and airlines.

Purchases Made at the Airport

Anything you buy in the airport duty-free areas between check-in and boarding can be brought on board, even if liquids exceed 100 ml. However, you must keep them inside the transparent plastic bag provided at purchase, keep the receipt, and only open the purchase after the flight, once you have reached your destination.

Items That Cannot Be Checked In

There are also a number of items that can only be carried in your carry-on and never checked in. These include power banks, which must always indicate the amperage, lithium batteries and devices containing them.

Lithium batteries can never be checked in because they could catch fire. However, they are not dangerous and are found in everyday items such as razors and cameras, as well as drones.

What Not to Bring in Your Carry-On

Now let's look at what you cannot bring in your carry-on. The items listed below are all prohibited for all passengers. These security rules are shared by all airlines and apply to any destination, regardless of ticket cost or type.
