Have you ever wondered where you'd be if you hadn't met certain friends along the way ? Friends are not only important, but they shape us as individuals. They can bring out the best (or sometimes the worst) in us. Why is friendship important?!

Friendship Strengthens Us

. It's not just an emotional matter, but a biological one as well.

Why is friendship important, even on a physical level? Simply put, sitting and chatting with a friend can lower blood pressure and boost the immune system.

And when it comes to group friendships, having a supportive one can even help you recover from tough times, including illnesses or depression. In short, friends help us live longer than we otherwise would.

A Matter of Chemistry

Friends show us new perspectives and spark our brightest ideas. Sometimes the help is very concrete: friends can get us a job and guide us toward new career milestones.

Laughing and connecting with friends positively changes your neurochemistry. Friends make us feel important, and that is a fundamental motivator in life.

Friendship is vital, but having the right friends for us is essential. Look for friends who have traits you admire, as behaviors and attitudes spread through groups like influence. Hanging out with happy friends makes it more likely that you will be happy yourself.

Also, it's important to cultivate friendships that promote personal growth and mutual well-being The right friends not only support us in difficult times but also push us to become the best version of ourselves. Sharing common interests, goals, and values creates a stronger, longer-lasting bond capable of withstanding the challenges of time. Maintaining authentic relationships based on trust and sincerity allows us to build an environment where we feel free to be ourselves without fear of judgment. Ultimately, surrounding ourselves with people who inspire and enrich us helps us live a fuller, more satisfying life.

The same goes for eating and healthy habits, like smoking and drinking: all are guided or at least influenced by the friends you spend time with.

If your friends are more interested than you in sports, politics, fashion, or money, your interests and values will shift toward theirs over time. That's fine if you want to be like them! But it's a problem if one day you wake up and realize you're very far from who you are or who you want to be.

Friendship Has Its Challenges

Friendship isn't always as rosy as Instagram would have you believe. Even your best friends can sometimes get on your nerves. It's hard to overcome conflict, give the benefit of the doubt, and bite your tongue. Changes in friendships that happen as people age, drift apart, and try to balance social life with being parents and work can be overwhelming.

If you argue with a friend or, worse, a close friend abandons you, you might find yourself heartbroken as you would after a romantic breakup, but with less support from those who—mistakenly—think that a friendship breakup isn't a big deal.

Navigating friendship is difficult, but the alternative of having no friends is much worse. Loneliness can send us into a downward spiral of depression, physical problems, and a cynicism toward others that isolates us even more.

That's why we must push ourselves to maintain our good friendships and to find new and stimulating ones.

Healthy friendships nourish the body, mind, and soul. If you think you can't live without friends, well, you're literally right!
