On April 22, 2022, the 52nd Earth Dayis celebrated, the largest international event raising awareness about environmental sustainability and protecting our planet. Worldwide it is called Earth Day and has always involved many people; currently, it is estimated that about one billion participate.
Earth Day: The History
It was 1969 when John McConnell, a peace activist who also fought for ecology, made his proposal at the UNESCO Conference held in San Francisco. He was firmly convinced that everyone should have the responsibility to care for the planet and to use its resources fairly.

That’s why he proposed a day dedicated specifically to celebrating the Earth’s beauty and its protection. It was a great success and the following year, in March, the first celebration took place with an official document recognizing the commitment to protect the Earth. On April 22, a month later, US Senator Gaylord Nelson established Earth Day. From that moment on, the event spread worldwide; currently, about 192 countries celebrate this special day every year.

Earth Day 2022: What It’s Dedicated To
Each year focuses on a particular topic; this year it is the loss of biodiversity and species extinction. Every year millions of species face extinction, and it is important to shed light on the causes to try to avoid disastrous consequences for the entire ecosystem.

We should demand measures from authorities to protect rare species and their habitats. Nature must be safeguarded, and we can also do something to prevent the worst, starting with a diet free of foods produced using harmful substances.
Earth Day: An Important Day for Everyone
One might say Earth Day should be every day, and that’s true. The establishment of a global day focused on positive and inspiring events was necessary to raise awareness
about our planet’s problems: pollution, disappearance of animal and plant species, depletion of non-renewable resources.
Unlike many other issues, these affect every single inhabitant of Earth, which is why the commitment to protect it should be constant and shared. Here in Italy, inRome , the Earth Village was set up, but with the arrival of Covid, the marathon is now only online. #OnePlanetOnePeople

Earth Day: What We Can Do for the Planet Governments certainly need to act in support of general protection measures, but we can also do something day by day to commit ourselves
to safeguarding our planet. 1. Use public transport more; avoid using the car when possible, and for short distances choose to go on foot or bybicycle
. Walking is good exercise for you and good for the environment! 2. Be mindful of left on in various rooms of the house, sometimes forgotten, but they consume more energy than you think. Even appliances on standby with constantly lit indicator lights should be turned off.

You may not have thought about it, but putting a lid on pots while cooking is excellent advice. This helps food cook faster or water boil more quickly, allowing you to save
gas and electricity. 4. Don’t waste water; choose a quick shower
instead of a hot bath, which actually wastes water and energy. 5. Don’t throw away what you no longer use. Start thinking in a circular
way before discarding items that you don’t need but might be useful to someone else. 6. Avoidwaste

: properly store leftover food daily so it can last up to 3 days. Don’t use disposable plastic bags; use reusable containers instead. 7. Try to eliminate all plastic bottles by choosing refillabledetergents and cleaning products
. You can’t imagine how much you’ll help the environment with this small gesture. 8. Adopt a. Yes, you heard that right: very often municipalities unfortunately lack sufficient funds to take care of parks, gardens, flowerbeds—in short, all green areas. Through local associations, you can purchase trees to plant, manage urban gardens, and get involved in maintaining green spaces.
