The origin of the Grand Canyon dates back to primordial times, as experts believe it has existed for over two billion years. For about 4,000 years, this partly desert area was uninhabited, until around 500 BC when the first human settlementswere recorded, later attributed to the Cohonina people.
A few centuries later, the Ancestral Puebloans inhabited the region and built new settlements, some traces of which remain today. The first explorationsoccurred in 1540, when the Spanish army led by Francisco Vazquez de Coronado identified the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. That same year, another Spaniard, García López de Cárdenas set out from New Mexico in search of the mysterious river named by the Hopi Indians. Two centuries later, in 1776, two Spanish missionaries finally explored the area of the North Rim, seeking a route to connect California to Santa Fe.
