It's no coincidence that you will find yourself facing majestic mountains over 2000 meters above sea level, then be enchanted by the valley rich with olive and lemon trees in bloom, whose scents spread everywhere.
In a previous article, we took you to discover the Veneto side of Lake Garda; in this one, we will travel to the Trentino side.
Before going into detail, want to help you get to know Lake Garda better. This gem nestled among the Alps was formed 10,000 years ago following the melting of the Alpine glaciers due to global warming. It is 52 kilometers long, 4 kilometers wide at the northern part, and 17 kilometers wide on the southern side.
It covers about 370 square kilometers with an incredible depth of 346 meters. The towns that characterize the Trentino shore are50 meters. 1. Riva del Garda
View of Riva del GardaIt is a tourist destination located in the northwestern part of Lake Garda and, with its 15,000 inhabitants, is the most important city of Upper Garda.
Walking through the city's alleys, you will immediately notice the Scaliger and Venetian imprint dating back to the 1400s, as it is evident in almost all the buildings.
Take time to visit the key points of Riva del Garda, namely Piazza Tre Novembre, the Palazzi Pretorio and the Apponale Tower. The latter dates back to the 13th century and was restored in the early 1900s.
It is 34 meters tall and, at the top, stands a weather vane angel called: “Anzolim de la Tor”. You can reach the top of the tower after climbing 165 steps; quite a workout. But it's worth it considering you can admire Lake Garda from a completely different perspective.
Near Piazza Tre Novembre, there is an arch called Porta Bruciata which, if you walk through it, will lead you to another square definitely worth a visit, namely Piazza San Rocco.
Another very characteristic square that recommend is Piazza Catena; named so because in the past, to defend the port, a massive chain was stretched to block invaders' advance. Until the early 1930s, the square hosted the imperial customs office which marked the border between the North and South of Lake Garda.
