If you love exploring Trentino, you can’t ignore this little gem nestled in the Brenta Dolomites. Here’s why.
Lake Tovel: Where Is It Located?
Also Known As the Red Lake, Lake Tovel is located in the eponymous valley in Val di Non (TN), within the Adamello Brenta Nature Park.
It sits at 1,178 meters above sea level in the municipality of Ville d’Anaunia, surrounded by the imposing rocky amphitheater of the Brenta Dolomites, which on the clearest days reflect in its crystal-clear waters, creating breathtaking scenes.
The Red Lake of the Bears
Even today, Lake Tovel is also called “the Red Lake” because of a curious phenomenon from the past. Until 1964, in summer, the waters along the lake’s shores would turn a vivid red color.
This phenomenon was due to the presence of an alga called Tovellia sanguinea, which bloomed thanks to the organic waste left by herds of cattle grazing near the lake.

Once you arrive nearby, just follow the signs for Val di Tovel on provincial road 14. The road is paved, so you can either continue by car and find parking near the lake or use the tourist shuttles departing from Cles and Tuenno.
