These sediments have a very angular shape resulting from the breakdown of rather ancient rock formations, often related to the so-called Scaglia Rossa period.
The action of weathering agents then initiated further erosion processes that developed pinnacles and badland shapes of great charm; combined with the relative ease of access to the trail, the Lame Rosse have become a site visited by thousands during the warmer months. The fact that the site is located at the end of a forest trail cutting through a ridge makes it even more astonishing when, upon arrival, you can admire a lunar landscape more fitting for the Grand Canyon than a part of central Italy.
The trail, being inside the Sibillini Mountains National Park, allows trekkers to observe plants such as oak, holm oak, hornbeam, and dog rose, while encountering porcupines, squirrels, hedgehogs, and even wild boars. The local birds are impressive too, with peregrine falcons, eagle owls, little owls, and goshawks visible to the luckier (and more patient) visitors.
