What Are Organized Treks?

We often hear the word trekking, but what does it really mean? It comes from the English “to trek,” which means to walk slowly, to go on foot. For several years now, organized treks have been offered to those who love immersing themselves in nature and walking, both in Italy and around the world. Along the way, you can admire the local flora and fauna until reaching destinations where you can rest and enjoy wonderful views.

There are different types of trekking: some are simple and suitable for everyone, including beginners, and others are difficult, which may include actual climbing and challenging stretches. For the latter, it’s advisable to be somewhat fit to avoid surprises.

In short, it’s better to start gently and just walk, beginning with simple and not too long organized treks. Experience and consistency will help you achieve better results; it will become a true sport.

Why Choose Organized Treks?

Taking a break for one or two days from the city chaos and discovering new places are already two important reasons. Not to mention that you’ll be doing physical activity without getting bored as might happen in a gym. Breathing fresh air and being in contact with nature will help you regain your physical and mental well-being. Additionally, you can meet new people and build friendships with those who share your passions.

In Italy there are many locations favored by trekking enthusiasts; between sea, mountains, and river areas, the choices are abundant. We suggest 5 stunning destinations each different in landscape and difficulty—choose your next trip!

1. Dolomites

The Dolomites are UNESCO World Heritage sites for good reason. We’re used to thinking of them as a winter holiday destination, but these mountains hide valleys and landscapes just waiting to be discovered. Just move away from the busiest areas and lose yourself on trails that will make you feel in another dimension.

Here you’ll find forests, lakes, meadows, and even fruit trees and vineyards that change color with every season.

There are various organized trekking routes passing through many mountain huts. You can reach up to 3000 meters in altitude and visit unique places like the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Lake Braies, and the Marmolada. These long walks are suitable for those who are already somewhat fit. and the Marmolada. These long walks are suitable for those who are already somewhat fit.

2. Castelli Romani

Those visiting Rome for a cultural holiday or living nearby can take one or more days to immerse themselves in this journey through history. From central Rome to the Castelli Romani, about 20 km of trails suitable for all, including children, stretch out. This Protected Natural Area is part of the Castelli Romani Regional Park.

Among woods and villages, you can walk along the roads ofancient Rome discovering unspoiled nature and archaeological remains. Once at Castelli Romani, one of the most beautiful routes is the circuit around Lake Nemi. It’s about 6 km and ideal even for beginners. Starting from the Ship Museum, after crossing fields, you reach the lake. Walking along its shores, you might be surprised to spot herons, cormorants, and other animals living here.

3. Portofino Regional Park

Among the organized trekking routes from the town of Camogli to the Portofino promontory, there are simple ones truly suitable for everyone. In this area on the eastern Ligurian Riviera, you can enjoy landscapes and scents typical of the Mediterranean scrub. You’ll also find two ancient villages accessible only on foot: Porto Pidocchio and San Fruttuoso.

Those without vertigo and with experience can dare to choose a route stopping at Passo del Bacio. This trail is traversed using chains because it has many stretches overlooking the sea.

4. Path of the Gods

Between Agerola and Positano, thus between the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts, lies the Path of the Gods. Its name comes from Greek legends telling that gods crossed it to save Ulysses, prey of the sirens of the island of Li Galli. You’ll walk perched above the blue seabeside the cliffs of the Lattari Mountains, and you can glimpse the Faraglioni of Capri and its Punta Pennata.

There are two versions of the same route: an easier one from Nocelle, and a more difficult one from Bomerano to Santa Maria del Castello. Protective barriers and signage are present in some sections.

Definitely not recommended for those with vertigo! Spring is the best time to go; in summer, the sun would be too intense.

5. Selvaggio Blu

This is said to be the most difficult trek in Italy, both technically and in length. It lasts at least 5 days in the Gulf of Orosei, in Sardinia, between Cala Gonone and Santa Maria Navarrese. Besides normal walking, you have to rappel with a rope along a stunning and wild stretch of coast, always watched over by the deep blue sea and the blue sky.

There are no services, huts, or houses along the route; you must carry enough water and food for the entire adventure and be ready to sleep outdoors.

We can definitely say it’s aunique and unrepeatable adventure, but it’s truly for those with a lot of experience and good fitness, including carrying a heavy backpack.

How to Prepare for Organized Treks?

We’ve given you some good ideas? Are you alone but eager to walk outdoors in new places? Find group organized treks and go! Check all the information and choose based on difficulty (usually rated from 1 to 5) and the length of the walk, and rely on experienced, certified guides.

Bring a light, waterproof backpack with everything you might need: water and food first and foremost. Don’t forget to wear the right shoes, essential for walking trips!
