The History of Bevilacqua Castle
The history of Bevilacqua Castle begins far back in 1336, initiated by Guglielmo I Bevilacqua.
A skilled but modest timber merchant, Guglielmo hailed from the province of Trento, and business led him to the court of Verona. There he quickly gained the favor of Cangrande I della Scala, becoming one of his most trusted commanders.
Construction of the castle began with a clear purpose: to defend the fief and its lord from attacks by the two rival families, the Estensi and the Carraresi.
However, after numerous battles in which the fortress suffered heavy damage, its function was repurposed. From 1532, the castle became a noble residencethanks to the work of architect Michele Sanmicheli.
The castle then enjoyed several centuries of great splendor, which unfortunately ended in 1848. Following the Napoleonic events, the castle was besieged by the Austrians and set ablaze.
A few years later, Felicita Bevilacqua decided to begin restoration work on the family estate, expanding it and giving it a whole new look in the neo-Gothic style of the time.
Upon Felicita’s death, the castle was left as a charitable gift, transformed into a residence for the elderly and those in needDuring World War II!
