Although Italy lacks the abundance of lakes found in countries like Canada, Finland, or more generally the far north, our beloved boot-shaped peninsula boasts several very important and interesting bodies of water. Making a list of Italy's most beautiful lakes is no easy task, but today in this article we will draw on all our mental resources to try to compile a list of all the unmissable places scattered across the peninsula.

Lake Como is one of the most important lakes in northern Italy and is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, Art Nouveau villas, and for inspiring one of the greatest novels in Italian literature.

Still in Lazio, how could we not mention Lake Bolsena? Back to northern Italy to talk about Lake Maggiore, a pre-Alpine lake that separates Italy from Switzerland. It is the second largest lake by surface area and is full of breathtaking landscapes, being surrounded by the Alps and many small characteristic villages that fill with snow in winter. Another highlight is the presence of two islands, Isola Bella and Isola Madre, in its center.

Lake Orta

Still speaking of lakes with islands, how could we not mention Lake Orta? This glacial lake is located in Piedmont and is known for its striking scenic beauty, nestled among gentle hills and lush forests. The lake contains San Giulio Island, inhabited and adorned with various buildings including a monastery. The nearby village of Orta San Giulio is also very beautiful, further crowning it among Italy's most beautiful lakes.

The lake contains three islands: Polvese Island, Maggiore Island, and Minore Island. Of these, only the largest is permanently inhabited by about fifteen residents.

Looking for a lake with a curious shape? In Abruzzo, there is a heart-shaped lake nestled between the Majella massif, the Gran Sasso massif, and the Abruzzo and Molise National Park. Lake Scanno is swimmable and is also near another lake, Lake San Domenico, which boasts truly stunning colors.
