Where to Go for Winter Hikes at Lake Garda?

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. With its surface area of 370 square kilometers, it stretches along the borders of three regions: Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Lombardy. It can therefore be easily reached from anywhere, and all the towns overlooking its waters are magical and paradisiacal places.

Given its vast size, Lake Garda’s waters touch a variety of very different landscapes. To the north, it takes on a narrow, elongated shape that extends into an Alpine landscape and is separated from Monte Baldo by the passage of the Adige River. In its southernmost part, the lake widens, taking on a semicircular shape. Here the waters lap the Po Valley. In the stretch towards Verona, Brescia, and Mantua, it is instead surrounded by moraine hills. The choice of destination therefore depends on your tastes.

Lake Garda is not only a summer tourist destination but also attracts many visitors in winter. The climate along the lake remains very mild and in the colder months it’s not uncommon to enjoy days around 17 degrees Celsius. The water temperature hovers around 12 degrees, with a December low of 6 degrees. Moreover, the water never freezes (unlike Lake Braies which becomes a sheet of ice). You can rest assured on this point; after all, the last time the lake was completely frozen over was during the particularly harsh winter of 1709!

Despite the favorable climate, it’s always wise to check with local associations, authorities, and information centers about the actual conditions of the trails and paths around Lake Garda. Winter hiking carries greater risks, so it’s necessary to be well-informed and properly equipped.

A longer and more challenging route is the one from Salò to the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rio, a small church built around the 1700s in the place where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared. This walk starts from the Scala Santa, a climb consisting of 145 steps built at the beginning of the last century. At the end of the route, you can also enjoy a wonderful view, perfect for taking souvenir photos and admiring other villages of the Brescia Garda area.
