What is it?
It is a system of gorges and deep ravines carved into the stone over thousands of years by the force of water laden with dust and abrasive grains, the powerful flow of the Ardo stream, locally called Art. The name Brent comes instead from the Venetian dialect brentana, meaning the river’s flood after heavy rains.
Despite its small size, it is considered one of the most beautiful natural works in the Belluno Prealps, thanks to its distinctive shape and the colors that paint its surface. The rock of Brent de l’Art is in fact made up of various layers of different colors, shades of red, gray, white, and green, gently rippled by the geological work of the earth and raised in relief due to the constant erosion by water.
It is precisely a simple and natural activity like the flow of water that has given life, over time, to this wonderful work that no architect could replicate. The most visible and dense layers emerging from the rocks are composed of cemented calcareous sands mixed with remains of marine invertebrate shells, while the brick-red hue comes from small amounts of iron oxide present in the sediments. In winter moreover, when temperatures drop sharply, true ice stalactites form, making the canyon even more magical and evocative.

The trail leading to Brent de l’Art is about 4 km long with an elevation gain of 131 meters and can be walked in just over 1 hour. It is mostly an easy route, suitable especially in spring and summer for the whole family but without infants or very young children because, due to steep and uneven terrain in some sections, strollers or prams are not allowed.
