What if the sunset shifted from the sky to the earth, dyeing the waters of a lake red? It sounds like a fairy tale, but this really happened for years at Lake Tovel, whose waters mysteriously turned a bright red with the arrival of summer. This phenomenon lasted until 1964 and unfortunately is no longer visible today, but it occurred so many times that it earned this wonderful lake the nickname “Red Lake”.
The Red Color of the Lake, Between Legend and Reality
There are different views on the ruby color of the lake : science links the phenomenon to the summer bloom of an alga called Tovellia Sanguinea, which is capable of releasing its color into the waters.
