The great success that Lake Braies is experiencing is closely linked to the Rai 1 TV series One Step From Heaven, starring Terence Hill as the commander of the San Candido Forestry Corps in Alto Adige.
The TV series brought into Italian homes one of the most beautiful and until then lesser-known places in the Bel Paese. After seeing it on TV for the first time, public interest was immediate. Amid disbelief that such a fairytale place really existed and was located in Italy, visitors immediately flocked there to admire its beauty in person.

Fittingly called “the Pearl of the Dolomites,” Lake Braies is located in the heart of the Fanes – Senes – Braies Nature Park, nestled between the Puster Valley and the Casies Valley, and sits at an altitude of 1,496 meters above sea level. The area, renowned for its tranquility and unspoiled nature, boasts numerous natural attractions such as the rocky face of Croda del Becco, as well as the nearby Lake Dobbiaco and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo Park.

How to Get to Lake Braies
Fortunately, the Braies Valley is well connected and served by public transport, and getting to Lake Braies is not difficult at all.
If you prefer public transport, you can use the shuttle line 442 which departs from Dobbiaco – Villabassa and takes you directly to the lake. Alternatively, starting from Monguelfo, you can take line 439. This is the option most recommended by the province of Bolzano to best preserve the area.
It is also possible to reach the area by train. From any region you depart, you can first reach Bolzano and from there take the regional train towards San Candido and get off at Villabassa –Braies station. From there, continue by shuttle.
Finally, if you are driving, take the Brenner A22 motorway and exit at Bressanone, then continue on the SS49to the Braies Valley. From there, continue on the provincial road 47 which will lead you to the lake.

Lake Braies Parking
If you plan to arrive at Lake Braies by car, keep in mind that parking nearby is available but paid and with limited spaces, which fill up very quickly.
Parking lots are well signposted and located at Lake Braies and at the Ponticello Parking, and reservations may be required. From there, you can reach the lake on foot without much effort.
What to Do at Lake Braies in Summer
The Braies Dolomites and the Fanes – Senes – Braies Nature Park are a perfect place to plan a holiday, even for families. The area has always been a favorite destination for those who love trekking and outdoor sports. There are so many things to do at the lake and nearby that fun is guaranteed for the whole family!
In fact, all seasons are perfect for visiting the lake, as it offers a different spectacle in every season. In winter, for example, the water surface freezes completely, allowing you to cross it on foot or with snowshoes. Many brave the cold to experience this and to cross-country ski in the Braies Valley.
However, the season when Lake Braies and the surrounding landscape show themselves in all their splendor is summer. The lake’s wonderful waters are more vivid and bright in their particular colors, and the sky reflects on them, creating a panorama worthy of a painting.
In addition, in summer you can also board one of those rowboats you’ve seen pictured in every photo of the lake and its pier. Boat rental is available from May to October, but due to high demand, a reservation might be necessary to use the service.
Keep in mind, however, that summer is also the season when visitors from all over the world flock here in droves. Avoid the hottest periods and weekends. The best option is to visit the lake during the week and start early in the morning to avoid problems and to admire the lake almost in solitude, or at least in a state close to it!
Hiking Trips
The area around Lake Braies is rich in beautiful trails for both trekking and cycling. Whichever path you choose, you will always be greeted by unique panoramas, villages, meadows, and mountain farms that will take your breath away. that will leave you breathless.
The most famous hike is the lake circuit, the circular path that goes around the body of water. It’s a fairly easy trek, with elevation changes of only 50 meters. It therefore presents no major difficulties and allows everyone, including families and children, to admire the lake from every possible perspective.
The trail is also facilitated by the presence of small staircases to overcome ascents and descents. In total, its duration is 2 hours, but you’ll find yourself making more stops because you won’t be able to resist taking photos at every step!
