What to See in the Province of Lecco Among Villages, Castles and Nature Trails
The province of Lecco is full of small villages overlooking the lake and surrounded by splendid mountain ranges. We have selected five destinations where the history of our country intertwines with unique natural views.
1. Bellagio
Our tour of what to see in the province of Lecco begins with Bellagio. Thanks to its special position, at the center of the branching of Lake Como and surrounded by the Alps, it is a destination that has won the hearts of all who have visited it.
The village is located within the Larian Triangle and includes very different areas within its vast territory: lake, mountain and hill.
It is therefore the ideal location for anyone wanting to spend a vacation immersed in nature, to hike towards Monte Palanzone or the Corni di Canzo, but also for lovers of water sports.
From Bellagio, you can visit all the surrounding villages during a boat trip or by taking part in a kayak tour.
The magnificent natural views are not the only things to see in this town. The hills and lake shores are dotted with noble villas, splendid architectural examples surrounded by well-kept and varied gardens. Many of these are private villas that can only be admired from the lakeside.
Villa Serbelloni, however, is open to visitors. It is owned by the Rockefeller Foundation of New York, surrounded by a large forest with centuries-old trees, whose paths lead to the Capuchin Convent and the Sfondrata.
Villa Melzi, finally, houses a small archaeological museum and hosts equally stunning gardens, rich with statues and busts, featuring a Venetian gondola brought here at the behest of Napoleon himself.
2. Varenna
On the opposite shore from Bellagio lies the fishing village of Varenna, one of the most beautiful in the province of Lecco. The town is one of the stops on the Sentiero del Viandante, a nature trail much loved by trekking enthusiasts, 40 km long but quite easy and very scenic.
Varenna is a unique place where traces of the past blend into a unique mix. The old fishing village is connected by a stretch of lakeside to the new harbor, a path called “the walk of love” for the romantic atmosphere suspended over the lake waters it offers.
The town is mainly known for its villas of notable architectural interest. Among them stands out Villa Cipressi, initially built in the 15th century but reworked in various styles until the last century.
