For some, summer means countless days spent by the lake. But whether you prefer the sea or the mountains, the lake is definitely worth exploring for a fun weekend on the water! Across the peninsula, we have an abundance of bodies of water to enjoy during the warmer months. Here’s how to dress for a lake trip lasting one or more days:

As much as you love the beach and the social scene, escaping into nature every now and then is a priceless pleasure. At the lake, during summer weekends, you can spend your days canoeing, kayaking, fishing, sailing or motorboating, or simply swimming and relaxing. It’s the perfect getaway when you just want to unwind and avoid crowds. It’s also great for going with friends and for family gatherings. Everyone can relax, spend the days having fun on the lake, and the evenings barbecuing and drinking on the dock. But what to wear for a summer weekend at the lake? And during other seasons? Here are some ideas to consider before packing.
What Clothing to Choose for the Lake?
The beauty of the lake is that the clothing is relaxed and effortless, like the surrounding nature . I usually pack shorts, tees, flip-flops, and simple dresses for summer weekends at the lake. Nothing too fancy or complicated, especially in summer, when packing for the lake basically means bringing things you can wear over a swimsuit. For example, long caftans and loose maxi dresses can be used as cover-ups and quickly put on when preparing dinner.

What to Pack for Summer
The Outfit to Wear or Bring for a Short One-Day (or Couple of Days) Vacation
If you’re heading into nature and wondering what to wear for a summer weekend at the lake, here’s a list for your luggage below.
Packing List
Swimsuit(s)
You can never have enough, especially during the summer season! But in many lakes you can swim from late spring through October. In any case, you’ll need them to sunbathe comfortably on the shore. Make sure you have enough for changes, even for day trips .
Towel(s)
Usually, a regular beach towel is enough, preferably terry cloth or synthetic materials that are very thin, dry quickly, and don’t take up much space in your suitcase or backpack.
You can also use a fabric towel if you don’t plan to swim but just want to sunbathe by the lake.
Change of Clothes for the Evening
A nice breezy dress in the height of summer will be perfect to put on after swimming in the lake, for a casual barbecue, or for an ice cream. It’s good to have at least one change with long sleeves, even in summer.
For spring and autumn, we also recommend bringing a sweatshirt or cardigan and a windbreaker: you’ll especially need them in the evening.
Shoes
It’s best to have at least two pairs of shoes: boat shoes, canvas shoes, to wear both during boat or motorboat trips and simply on land during a walk along the lakeside.
Also bring a pair of sandals and flip-flops: prioritize comfort and breathable materials.
For every season, walking shoes or sneakers will also be suitable.
Straw Hat or Cap
It’s always good to have a hat with a visor or wide brim, light-colored and lightweight, to protect yourself from the sun. Don’t be fooled: the sun at the lake is just as strong as at the sea!
Sunglasses
For the same reasons, never forget to always have a pair of sunglasses and sunscreen with you.
Bottled Water
You can never have enough! Bring a water bottle and refill it at public fountains.
Cooler Bag
To keep drinks cool on the boat or shore, bring a cooler bag, along with a large and comfortable shoulder bag, with adequate ice. You can keep both water and snacks inside, which are essential during a lake trip!
Swim Goggles or Mask
For a day on the boat, it’s essential to bring swimming gear. If you also plan to do sports you have plenty of options: water skiing, wakeboarding, etc.
Fishing Gear and License
If you plan to fish from the boat, it’s best to be prepared: bring all the necessary equipment.
Insect Repellent
This will be especially useful from sunset onwards!
Sanitary Wipes
Phones/Camera and Portable Chargers
Waterproof Bag for Documents

Other Tips
Check the Weather Forecast
Also, before heading out for a day on the lake, make sure to check the weather forecast! Conditions can change quickly during summer, and thunderstorms are very common. Even if you hear just one thunderclap, it’s never a good idea to be on the water if there’s a storm nearby. Lightning can travel quickly over open areas and around water. The good thing about summer storms is that they usually pass quickly. So, hang in there! Sometimes it’s better to wait an hour or so until the danger passes to ensure everyone is safe and happy. Then, the fun can continue!
