"How hard can mountain hiking be," someone might say. "Just bring a thick sweater and snow boots and you're all set!" But nothing could be further from the truth. Mountain walks can be tricky for those who don't know how to dress properly and what to pack in their backpack. So don't be caught unprepared on your next hike; discover with us the best mountain hiking gear.

Some Clothing Tips

Hiking in the mountains is a healthy activity that offers many physical benefits, but also helps to relax, fight depression, and find peace. Indeed, you find yourself immersed in a varied, pristine, and wild natural landscape which, as such, can also pose dangers. That's why it's best to carry only the bare essentials and wear the most suitable clothing to avoid injury or being caught off guard by bad weather.

Mountain hikes are mainly organized during the warmer seasons, and in this article we therefore recommend ideal clothing for spring and summer. If you are planning a winter hike instead, you can find the specific article for the colder months here.

Layering Your Clothes

All hikers know that when it comes to mountain hiking gear, there is one big rule: dress in layers, like an onion. It's a very simple tip but can really make a difference.

Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable and vary from area to area. There may be sections exposed to wind or scorching sun, as well as trails shaded by trees where it can feel cold. Dressing in layers is therefore the smartest precaution because it allows you to add or remove clothing as soon as you feel too hot or too cold. This way you avoid excessive sweating and letting sweat dry on your skin, which can cause unpleasant muscle cramps.

The best fabric to choose for a hike, both for shirts and pants, is technical fabric. Comfortable and breathable, it helps to maintain the right body temperature and keep your skin dry. Long-sleeve shirts are better suited for mid-season, while short sleeves are ideal for summer. Tank tops should be avoided as they expose the skin more to chills, sunburn, and insect bites.

For the same reasons, it's better to choose long pants over shorts. Leggings are the best choice for both men and women, or loose, comfortable trousers, always avoiding stiff fabrics like jeans.

An essential item is the jacket, made of synthetic fabric and absolutely waterproof and breathable! It will be your shield against all weather elements, especially wind. In the shoulder seasons, you might also need an extra fleece layer, always in technical fabric or fleece if temperatures drop.

Footwear

Footwear deserves a separate chapter because it is perhaps the most important accessory when hiking in the mountains. This activity involves the whole body, but it starts from the feet, which must be comfortable to best support the entire spine. Trekking boots are the best choice even in summer. There are of course models designed for high temperatures, lighter and more breathable, but still waterproof.

When buying, there are two essential features not to overlook. You are about to hike in the mountains, along rough and uneven trails, so the shoe must have a durable outer sole with grooves to better grip the terrain. Equally important is the inner sole, which must be soft to absorb shocks and allow you to walk long distances without feeling tired. Also, a high-cut boot is preferable because it better supports the ankle, protecting it from impacts and falls.

How to Pack Your Backpack

A well-packed backpack is the most valuable ally of all your mountain hiking gear. But let's start with the backpack itself. The old school backpack from middle school memories is absolutely not an option; be ready to make a good investment you won't regret.

Look for a trekking-specific backpack, with a capacity between twenty and thirty liters. These are lightweight and very comfortable, with soft padding and adjustable back straps, designed to fit your body and not become a burden during the hike. Also, the outer fabric must be waterproof to protect it in any condition.

The Bare Essentials

Your backpack shouldn't be overloaded but should contain only the bare necessities. Whether you set off on an adventure alone or join an organized trip, what should never be missing in your backpack is a map of the area, a compass, and your smartphone with GPS and geolocation apps. These are essential to avoid losing your way or to be located if you get lost.

Finally, a flashlight really makes a difference if you are caught out after dark, and a small first aid kit could save your life. Never forget a multitool knife and a lighter, just in case.

For mountain hikes, you don't need many accessories, but trekking poles can prove very useful. We're talking about classic trekking sticks that help provide better grip and stability on rough terrain. Their benefits don't end there; they also help protect against falls and are very useful when you need to cross a river. Using them also engages the upper body, resulting in better posture, improved blood circulation, and respiratory capacity.

Now that your backpack is ready, all that's left is to set off and discover the wonderful Italian peaks, perhaps in the company of other trekkers like you!
