to all business sectors and national institutions. 2022 will mark the 18th edition of this now famous and beloved campaign promoting the reduction of energy consumption and encouragingsustainable lifestyles . This year, it will be even more symbolic given the increases in electricity and gas prices.
From the simple act of turning off the lights to a longer-term commitment to reducing all energy waste, this campaign involves every sector of civil society.
M’illumino di Meno: History and 2022 Program
Born in 2005 thanks to the initiative of the hosts of the radio program “Caterpillar” on Rai Radio2, “M’illumino di Meno” quickly became a world-famous eventIts name comes from the famous poetic piece by Giuseppe Ungaretti titled “M’illumino d’immenso,” included in the poem “Mattina” dated January 26, 1917.
The date for the 18th edition is set for March 11 2022 and the invitation remains the same: to turn off, pedal, green up, and improve. This is the foundation from which many events will be organized across Italy.
In particular, this year the symbolic energy silence involving tens of thousands of people, companies, institutions, associations, and other groups, will be accompanied by other initiatives focused on energy consumption. Among these, special attention will be given to the role of the bicycle and plants, two factors that can transform urban mobility in city centers and help improve the lives of individuals and, above all, the Planet.
M’illumino di Meno: The 18th Edition’s Ambassadors
The 2022 edition of “M’illumino di Meno” features the contribution of two symbolic figures of the campaign. The ambassadors are Paola Gianotti and Stefano Mancuso. Paola is one of the most active promoters of the cycling world. Stefano, on the other hand, is a plant neurobiologist. He particularly regards plants as true “air purifiers”. They will be the key element to complete the much-discussed ecological transition.
To emphasize the global scope of the event and the activities involving the entire Planet, Paola Gianotti will undertake a historic bike ride. Her route will cross Europe from north to south. For this occasion, the starting point chosen for Paola Gianotti will be Stockholm, in the square where young activist Greta Thunberg will organize a new protest against climate change.
Paola Gianotti’s departure is scheduled for Friday, February 25, 2022. The cyclist will travel the entire EuroVelo network to arrive in Italy on the very day when the “M’illumino di Meno” events begin. The itinerary will pass through several highly symbolic locations for environmental advocacy, including the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels. Here, a cutting from the Falcone Tree will be
donated by the Carabinieri Biodiversity Group and dedicated to former President David Sassoli , who recently passed away. Along the journey, Paola Gianotti will carry other plants that will begifted along the way. These will form the first part of the European forest envisioned and desired by the creators of “Caterpillar” and all the organizers of the celebration. The 2022 edition of “M’illumino di Meno” will follow
the important decision made by the G20 toplant 1 trillion trees by 2030 . To continue along the path set by institutions worldwide, “Caterpillar” and Rai Radio2, with the collaboration of Rai for Social Causes, have decided toinvolve their radio audience in creating the first forest branded “M’illumino di Meno”. This will also be done with the collaboration
of the Carabinieri Corps and, in particular, through the project “ A Tree for the Future”. This project is managed by theCarabinieri Biodiversity Group and aims to plant 10,000 trees over 10 years 50. This will create a widespread forest throughoutItaly , made up ofsmall native species trees that will grow and improve environmental quality. To highlight the promotion of
sustainable lifestyles and the civic and social commitment of the event, among the trees already planted in many Italian schools, some have been grown from cuttings of the Falcone Tree . This is the famous ficus planted inPalermo , in front of the home of Giovanni Falcone and Francesca Morvillo,in memory of their sacrifice against the mafia. As every year, “M’illumino di Meno” is not just an
environmental campaign. It is also a great opportunity for schools, universities, local authorities, and associations across the country to contribute to the project by adopting a tree.
